Two weekends ago we hosted a two-day Passion International Photography Competition held at The Salon Professional Academy here in Tampa. We want to thank all the salon owners, hair designers, makeup artists, assistants and models who participated, we sincerely appreciate all your support and shared creativity.

With the help of everyone, we shot 134 models with 11 participating salons and The Salon Professional Academy. Many of our models even had second looks. We want to share a few special thank you notes with the first one going to Joe and Tonya Goodrich of the Euphoria Salon, who with their team shared 19 terrific models. We also want to share an extra special thank you to Joanne Powers and Kathy Costa of The Salon Professional Academy. We could not have asked for a better co-host location. Opening up your fabulous cosmetology school for us, Passion and our salon friends for this event was also most appreciated and gracious. Your students were terrific as hair designers and models. You could not have done any more for us.

Although 9 months is far from now we look forward to receiving our Passion outtake photographs which we will share with everyone when the time comes. In the meantime check out some behind the scenes photos taken during the two-day photography sessions.

Taylor Swift pushed open the door for the new “Full On” bangs craze at the 2010 American Music Awards. Full on bangs are a heavy fringe look that can accentuate anyone’s eyes.

THREE TYPES OF FRINGE:

The “Full On” bang is very heavy bangs, which could either be a precise straight line fringe or can have a little textured fringe. Both will frame and show off anyone’s eyes.

The “Wispy” bang is a light and subtle fringe. This bang is great for anyone looking for a way to disguise their forehead lines. It’s an inexpensive way to hide these lines without the Botox!

The “Choppy” bang is for a more modern style. This type of fringe will give any modern style a more edgy and dramatic look.

WHAT TYPES OF LOOK DOES FRINGE BANGS MOST OFTEN ACHIEVE?

Depending on the fringe type it will give anyone a more youthful look, taking up to 10 years off of some people.

DO FRINGE BANGS SUIT ANY ONE TYPE OF WOMAN’S STYLE OR SHAPE OF FACE BETTER?

A fringe is great for those women with larger foreheads. It will reduce the distance between their hair and eyes which will then draw more attention to the person’s eyes then their head.

Beauty Stores and Salons Asked to Send Relief and Support for Oil Spills

Cleanup efforts of the marshes, beaches and wildlife of the Gulf Coast will continue long after BP successfully seals up the hole in the ocean. With oil now spread across four states, officials say it will take months to clean up the oil on the surface and years to restore the environment and its habitats. As many environmental activists look for ways to contribute to the cleanup efforts, one organization provides the opportunity to do just that. As a result green oil spill cleanup is being revolutionized in an unusual way with the use of human hair collected by salons across the country.

As word spread of this new cleanup initiative, salons began to take action. In Tampa, Florida the Michael Angelo Hair Studio has partnered with Matter of Trust, an ecological public charity that assists in oil cleanup by promoting environmental sustainability and collecting hair donations for this important cause.

According to Michael Angelo Hair Studio owners, Michael Angelo and Anthony Bellapigna, “Our studio has been spreading awareness to southern Florida salons. In doing so, we have successfully signed up many other salons to help participate in Matter of Trust’s donor program.” Together with the help of south Tampa community members and salon clients, Michael Angelo Hair Studio is collecting hair clippings which will be donated to Matter of Trust, so they can be made into oil spill cleanup mats and containment booms.

Phil McCrory, a hairstylist from Alabama, first discovered how hair could help soak up oil and aid in disaster relief after he noticed the fur on Alaskan otters was completely soaked with oil due to the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill. He began testing how much oil he could collect with the hair clippings from his salon and from here he invented the “hairmat” to help clean up oil contaminated waters. From this point on, Matter of Trust has been collecting hair clippings, sorting them and shipping the fibers off to nonwoven needlepunch factories to make batches of hairmats to use for oil spill relief. Matter of Trust also creates booms from loose hair that is stuffed into nylon stockings which are then doubled up and tied together to surround and soak up oil.

Initially BP’s Critical Resources Materials Management Team were very excited to use the donated natural fibers to help with cleanup efforts. Unfortunately, this past May BP’s Public Affairs department contacted Matter of Trust to notify them that they would not be using the donated materials. According to a press release, “Commercial sorbent boom absorbed more oil and much less water than hair boom, making it the better operational choice.” Many experts still believe the natural fibers that make up these hair booms and hair mats pose less of a threat to our oceans compared to the toxic industrial solvents currently being used. According to Marine Toxicologist, Riki Ott PhD, “The benefits of removing oil waste with natural fibers largely outweighs the minimal immediate risk to the environment. Also they reduce the secondary pollution concerns that come with using oil based products, such as only synthetic boom and dispersants.”

Despite BP’s unwillingness to use the donated natural fibers, activists believe these materials will eventually be put to good use considering there are about 26,000 oil spills a year. Donated materials are currently being used to protect the shores, estuaries and canals of gulf municipalities, harbors, beach condo associations and hotels. The organization shows no signs of slowing down.

Do you want to take part in the cleanup effort? Start by signing up for the Matter of Trust donor program. According to Matter of Trust, “The U.S. has over 300,000 hair salons and each one cuts an average of a pound of hair per day. By joining our relief effort and signing up for our donor program, your salon will help us make a difference in the ecosystem and to help prevent further damage from oil spills that continue to aggressively destroy coastal water ways.” As of July, all 19 of their warehouses were full, however you can sign up for their email updates and stay informed on future donation opportunities.

Hair salons can make an even greater impact if they partner with their local beauty supply store or other local salons. Organizing boom-making parties or hair-harvesting drives are great ways to get the community involved. In many Gulf Coast cities volunteers organize “Boom B Q’s” where other volunteers help to assemble booms. Many salons have also been hosting “hair-raising” events including “Cut-a-thons” and “Shave-a-thons” to collect donations. This may not be the end-all solution but it will hopefully play a small yet important part in the ultimate recovery of the Gulf Coast.

For more information on how you can get involved, visit www.MatterOfTrust.org.

Michael Angelo offers 10 Tips to Pamper Your Color-Treated Hair on A Girl’s Gotta Spa! blog. They’ve recently been listed as one of the Top 50 Beauty Blogs by Konector and as one of the Top 9 Beauty Blogs by Beauty Store Business Magazine.

Here are some of those tips:

Tip 1: Trim your hair every four to six weeks to remove split ends and to help make your hair more manageable. A great haircut is the best foundation for keeping your hair healthy and looking its best.

Tip 2: Use a shampoo specifically formulated for haircolor treated hair. If you must wash your hair every day, shampoo only once. When you shampoo, avoid tugging your hair and wash gently. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of shampoo. Michael Angelo recommends products like Mane-Tain Shampoo by Michael Angelo Masterpiece Haircare. This professional haircolor safe shampoo gently cleanses, restoring your hairs essential nutrients and natural beauty.

Tip 3: Use a conditioner formulated specifically for color-treated hair and apply it to your hair every time you shampoo. It is best to apply an additional amount to the ends of your hair and to rinse thoroughly to remove all traces and minimize any film that can hide your natural shine. Michael Angelo recommends Main-Tain Conditioner. The unique formula is infused with structurizing proteins and botanicals to penetrate into your hair shaft, producing benefits above and beyond any singular protein conditioner

Tip 4: Invest in a special micro-fiber towel that removes excess moisture from your hair after you shampoo and condition. These towels absorb more moisture than regular bath towels and can cut down on drying time. Once your hair is towel dried, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. Wide tooth combs are less likely to cause split ends and breakage.

Tip 5: After you towel dry your hair, allow your hair to minimally air dry prior to blow drying. The more heat you apply to your hair, the more damage you can inflict to the cuticle.
